29 Week Appointment

Yesterday, we had our 29 week appointment. My doctor was very excited about my weight gain - 7.5 lbs in 3.5 weeks! And boy do I feel it! The visit went great - the measurements were right on target and Ella Grace's heart beat was at a steady 145 bpm. Our next appointment is in 2 weeks and we now go every two weeks to see how the little one is progressing.

We finished our last childbirth prep class on Thursday and I signed us up for a free hospital tour in March. Our pediatrician is all set and now we have to keep adding our names to the never-ending childcare waiting lists. I believe we're on 4 now but have several others we're going to look into. Not so fun!

Last night, Brian and I were in baby mode. I washed all of Ella's clothes, started ironing and hanging up her dresses, set up her high chair to see what it looked like (I love how it is foldable and fits in her closet!) and unpacked all of her shower gifts while Brian set up her little crib. It's so cute! We were up until 3 a.m. so it was nice to sleep in today. Today, I think we're going to run to Babies R Us and IKEA to get her mattress and dresser. It's all starting to come together!

Week 29

Today marks the 29th week of our pregnancy. I just got really nervous! 1 week until we're at week 30 - the final stretch! I just told Brian "do you realize next week is 30 weeks and we've done nothing, nothing?!" I'm hoping this weekend he will have time to set up Ella Grace's crib and we can go shopping for her mattress, dresser, rocking chair, all the necessities, etc. Once her furniture is in place, I can start going through the 6 huge boxes of baby shower gifts my parents shipped to us and washing lots of dresses!

Below is more information about Ella this week:

At 29 weeks pregnant, Ella Grace is almost 17 inches tall now (nearly as tall as she will be at birth), close to three pounds ((a weight that will likely more than double — and may even come close to tripling (let's hope not! I was 6 lbs even!) — by delivery time)), and the size of a squash. Her wrinkled skin is smoothing out as more fat is deposited under the skin surface. This fat, called white fat, is different from the earlier brown fat that she accumulated. Brown fat is necessary for body temperature regulation while white fat (the fat you have, Mom) actually serves as an energy source.

This explains why Ella feels so…well…energized! Space in her living quarters is now at a premium, so I'll be feeling jabs and pokes from elbows and knees mostly. But those kicks will be more vigorous than before (and also less erratic) because she is stronger and excitedly responding to all sorts of stimuli — movement, sounds, light, etc.

It won't be long before you'll need to buy that first baby toothbrush! If you recall, her baby-teeth buds formed weeks ago, but now the buds for permanent teeth are forming in her gums as well.

Ella is definitely growing - I've gained about 6-7 lbs in the last 3.5 weeks! My doctor should be happy since I was still on the low-end of weight gain at our last visit. My belly is getting bigger and she's moving around a lot from time to time too. Today, I was in a meeting, looked down, and my stomach was moving all over the place. It looked so funny!

Overall, I'm feeling good. My back is not hurting nearly as much as it was a week ago, which is awesome! I think I have a cold brewing but am hoping it will pass or be a short-lived one! The tiredness is definitely coming back but some days I am finding a bit more energy. I'm also trying to get to the gym 3 or so times a week to walk on the treadmill and keep my upper body strength up...I've definitely been slacking in that area.

Brian and I are extremely busy with work and can't wait to take a few days off at the end of February for our trip to Maui (as long as I don't have any complications). We have been very blessed with this pregnancy so far and hope and pray Ella and I will stay healthy over the next 10 or so weeks.

Another Moving Story the Media Fails To Share

A friend of mine, Laura Beth, sent this e-mail to me and I found it so moving I thought I'd share it with you. Just another remarkable story the media fails to share with America.

Pam knows about the pain of considering abortion.

More than 21 years ago, she and her husband, Bob, were serving as missionaries to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in a contaminated food or drink. She entered into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant. Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted. The doctors "didn't think of it as a life, they thought of it as a mass of fetal tissue," Pam said. While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband, "If you will give us a son, we'll name him 'Timothy,' and we'll make him a preacher." Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and, eventually, gave birth to a health baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam's youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father's ministry in the Philippines. He also plays football. Pam's son is Tim Tebow.

Last year, the University of Florida's star quarterback, became the first sophomore in history to win college football's highest award, the Heisman Trophy. Tim's notoriety and the family's inspiring story have given Pam numerous opportunities to speak on behalf of women's centers across the country. She was the keynote speaker at the Oct. 23, 2008, benefit banquet for two Louisville ministries. A Woman's Choice Resource Center offers such services as free pregnancy tests, post-abortion counseling, adoption information, and material support. Necole's Place is a companion ministry that provides support services for women in need. Several Louisville-area Kentucky Baptist churches and Long Run Baptist Association help support both ministries.

A Woman's Choice board chairman, John Schmitt, reported at the banquet that in the 20 years since the resource center opened, 4,500 children have been saved from abortion -- 400 in this year alone. Speaking of the thousands of lives saved, Pam Tebow said, "That just blows my mind. Every little baby you save matters."

Quick Note - Ella's First Autograph

Quick Note…Ella Grace received her first autograph today! James Morrison, an English singer-songwriter, noticed I was prego, asked when I was due and signed a CD for both of us… “To Lauren and bump”. I thought that was cute! Ella seems to really like music! As he played, she was kicking up a storm. This is a good thing since a lot of music is played at our house!

Week 28 - 7 Month Mark

Today marks the 28th week of our pregnancy - 7 months! - and boy was it an interesting day!

I'll spare you all the details, but today at work, I experienced some complications that gave me quite a scare. Before I could even get downstairs and out of my building to call my doctor, Brian was already there to pick me up and take me. It's so nice having our doctor just 5 minutes away in case of emergencies. We were there before I could even get anyone on the phone! I definitely have to give my husband a lot of credit because he was so calm and collected as I became hysterical due to not being able to get anyone from the doctor's office on the phone!

Anyway, I had to be hooked up to a fetal monitor where we listened to Ella Grace's heartbeat for 20 minutes or so and also checked to make sure I wasn't having contractions. I also had to have some other tests/exams and everything looked great! A scary beginning had a happy ending! We're not sure what exactly caused the problems but think the move and me overdoing it probably had something to do with it.

Another positive outcome to this event was that we were able to meet with another doctor since ours wasn't there today. She was actually the doctor we originally tried to see but she was booked. So it was nice to see a high risk pregnancy doctor today and know that were in good hands if she happens to be the one who delivers our little girl.

On to the most important one, Ella Grace. Still the size of a growing eggplant, she weighs in at about two and a half pounds and stands — or rather lies — at almost 16 inches.

At 28 weeks pregnant, she may be dreaming. Brain wave activity measured in a developing fetus shows different sleep cycles, including the rapid eye movement phase, the stage when dreaming occurs.

By now, she has added blinking to her growing bag of tricks. Other impressive new talents being added to Ella's roster in the womb include coughing, more intense sucking, and, perhaps most important, better breathing.

The good news is that babies born this week, though premature, have an excellent prognosis because their lungs have reached the point (for the most part) of maturity — so you too can breathe a little easier now. Of course, it's still best if a baby doesn't check out of that uterine hotel just yet — there's still a lot of growing and maturing to do over the next 12 weeks.

Starting today, I'm going to start taking it A LOT easier. I'm just going to have to get over the fact that our house is not going to be completely clean and settled for awhile. All and all, everything is still going well. I'd rather not have these annoying backaches and shooting pains in my tail bone and down my legs, but just by reading up on those problems, I don't think they're going away anytime soon.

Ella is doing well - just kicking and moving around a lot. It was relieving to hear her steady heartbeat today and all of her movements. She was quite active during the scare!

I'll have Brian take a picture of the bump and post it later this week.

Countdown to our Babymoon

Have I mentioned how excited we are to go on our "Babymoon?" With the snowy weather and our crazy and never ending moving experience, I can't wait to enjoy some warm, sunny weather! We're headed to Maui Feb. 26th-March 3rd. I'm definitely pushing it since I'm not supposed to travel after March 1st, but due to accommodating work schedules and the fact that Brian can't take time off until after Feb. 15, these were the only days we were left with! I've gotten the O.K. from my doctor (as long as I don't have complications before then) so no worries there!

Just thought I'd share b/c it's been on my mind today! 36 days to go!

Week 2 of Childbirth Prep Class

Last night we went to our 2nd birth preparation class. It was definitely less graphic than the first one. Funny how they start the program off by freaking you out with videos you really don't want to see. Anyway, we spent most of the time talking about breathing techniques...and had to practice those techniques. It was quite funny and of course, most of us were giggly the whole time. I think Brian and I have it down though - He He Hoo, He He He Hoo! I told him I don't think I'm going to want to breathe like that for a long period of time; it makes me tired! I've always been one to hold my breath and tense up when I'm uncomfortable (ex. my butt-kicking workout classes that I know longer can go to for now) so this all should be VERY interesting!

Last night, Ella Grace was EXTREMELY active as we were trying to fall asleep. One time, she kicked so hard that I jumped and startled Brian a little! We also felt some sort of limb sticking out but really aren't sure what we were feeling...maybe part of a leg or something. Who knows!

I'm soooooo glad it's finally Friday. Of course, we have another busy weekend ahead of us - cleaning and all - but I hope to get some rest!

Oh, and some exciting news...I received a letter today from Amazon wishing us good luck on our pregnancy and offering us a free Britax convertible car seat as a special gift! We had registered for one and are so excited that we can take that item off our registry...it's a $300 car seat! What a nice gift! So of course, I placed the order and it will be here on Tuesday! So fun!

Week 27

Oh what a week! Is it Friday yet? Because it needs to be!!! You have no idea how worn out me and Brian are from this move! Poor Brian had to move EVERY SINGLE box, piece of furniture, etc down two sets of stairs into a truck and then up another two sets of stairs into our new house. Despite the moving frustrations, heavy lifting and soreness, he has not complained once and been quite a trooper! We still have another 2 or so loads left to grab and then comes the fun cleaning of our old place. Needless to say, this process seems neverending!

BUT, we LOVE our new townhome. It's so nice not having anyone making noise above or below us and I really like having the keypad access from our garage so I don't have to deal with locking doors all the time. It's in the perfect location too-we are one block from all of the restaurants, coffee shops, etc so no more dealing with parking and meter fees! Otis seems to like it too! Hopefully, he will lose a pound or two from all the running up and down the stairs.

Now, on to Ella. We are at 27 weeks in our pregnancy. Below is more information about Ella this week:

Beginning at this stage, your baby's length will be measured from top of head to toe — which makes Ella Grace nearly a full 15 inches now. And at just over two pounds, she has doubled in weight from four weeks ago.

Her auditory development (hearing) is progressing as the network of nerves to the ears matures. And even though the sounds she hears are muffled (thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering those ears), she may recognize both mom and dad's voices. So this might be a good time to read and even sing to her (or rather, my belly; plus, I can promise you she doesn't want to hear me sing!) — and a good chance to start boning up on those nursery rhymes and lullabies I'll need to be repeating (and repeating) pretty soon. Also, If Brian presses his ear to my belly, he might be able to hear the baby's heartbeat.

Ella's taste buds are very developed now too (with more taste buds than he or she will ever have outside the womb, actually). Need a taste test? If I eat some spicy food, she will be able to taste the difference in the amniotic fluid (but keep in mind that you'll have different mealtimes, with hers coming about two hours after mine). Some babies will even respond to that spicy kick by hiccupping. And although hiccups (which feel like belly spasms to me) may seem like they're disturbing to her, she isn't stressed at all. It's just one more sensation that babies need to get used to.

She has been pretty quiet this week due to all of my crazy activity. I have been non-stop so I guess all of that activity is rocking her to sleep! She just likes to kick at night while I'm trying to sleep:)

All and all, everything is going well. We go to our 2nd week of childbirth prep classes tonight and in the next week or two, we are going to start working on her little nursery. Right now, it's just covered in all of her boxes! We're also starting to look into childcare (just a little late on this) and are going to look at a facility today. Lots to do, so little time to do it!

Oh, 1 more week until I'm officially 7 months! Almost there!

Week 26

We have now entered Week 26 of our pregnancy. I believe this is the last week of my second trimester. As I previously posted, we had our 26 week appointment yesterday and everything looked/sounded great!

I think Ella Grace has rapidly grown in the last week or so because not only has my belly FINALLY popped out but she has gained some major strength! She's kicking like crazy! If only she was doing this earlier last week-then everyone could have felt her moving around. Instead, she decided to be stubborn! Hmmm, imagine that! Just like her parents!

Anyway, I can definitely feel her practicing her back handsprings and back tucks all day long and it's so much fun!

This week, Ella Grace is still an eggplant, just slightly larger.

Look who's looking. Your baby's eyes — which have been closed for the past few months (so that the retina, the part of the eye that allows images to come into focus, could develop) — are beginning to open at 26 weeks pregnant. What this means is that Ella Grace is able to see what's going on now. But do try this at home for kicks (baby's that is): Shine a flashlight at your stomach. Your baby might kick in response (as in: "Get that light out of my eyes!").

The iris, the colored part of the eye, still doesn't have much pigmentation (that'll fill in over the next month or two), so it's too early to start guessing your baby's eye color. Even the color your baby will be born with might not be the permanent shade; so you may be kept guessing until your baby is close to six months old.

Look what else is going on this week: Ella's brain-wave activity is kicking in at this stage in fetal development, which means she can not only hear noises but can now also respond to them. Not in so many words, of course, but with an increase in pulse rate or activity.

And talking about activity, at your baby's current height and weight (about nine inches tall and two pounds), and at the rate she is growing, your baby will soon be feeling a little cramped in your uterus. Not to worry, there's still plenty of room for her to grow. It just means our little gymnast will have less room for those somersaults, cartwheels, and other Olympic feats.

This week is an incredibly busy week for us. We have our first birth prep class tomorrow night (Brian is not happy...it's the BCS championship game! Poor planning on our part), we've been packing all week and move on Saturday. I also bought Ella's bedding last week with the gift cards we received (thank you Mom, Dad, Lisa, Judy and Leslie), her 3-in-1 Exersaucer arrived on Monday, crib yesterday, and paintings for her nursery today! So of course, we're just adding to our existing mess but it's fun to see some of her nursery items.

Life is a bit stressful right now but we're excited to move into our new townhouse and get settled. Oh, and I must point out that we are now under 100 days until being full term. Just a little scary yet exciting!

Week 26 Appointment

Today, I had my 26 week appointment. All went well and Ella Grace's heart beat was at a steady 145 bpm. Looks like we're right on track and my next appointment is in 3 weeks. After that appointment, I start seeing my doctor every two weeks! We're getting closer!
